GOLF SIMULATOR FAQS

How much height do I need?
We recommend a minimum ceiling height of 3 metres to ensure you have enough room to comfortably swing a driver. It is possible to go lower if you don’t require that height for your driver swing, however, most people want a home golf simulator to enjoy with friends and its worth ensuring your own simulator is fully useable for all players.
A 3 metre ceiling will require planning permission, which we can advise and take care of for you. There is an option to build under permitted development if obtaining planning consent is not possible.
This would result in a 2.8 metre ceiling height and therefore some compromises.
How much width do I need?
We recommend a minimum width of 4.5 metres. This means that after enclosure building and framing, you have a 4 metre wide screen. A 4 metre screen is ideal for both right and left handers to hit into the centre of the screen and most launch monitors can be set up without needing to be moved for each right or left handed player.
It is possible to use a 3 metre wide screen, where the player stands and hits into 1 side of the screen (the right side for right handed players). However, it is nearly impossible to then switch between left and right handed players. This should only be considered if there are significant planning restrictions and you intend to use the space only for personal use.
If you’ve got the space, why not go bigger? More width can allow for a widescreen 16:9 or 16:10 ratio which is perfect for doubling up as a home cinema. Something definitely worth considering at the design stage.
How much depth will I need?
The depth requirement for a home golf simulator primarily depends on the type of technology used for simulation, which includes:
Camera-based technology: This type read the ball flight straight off the club face and either sit to the side of the ball or overhead in the enclosure. As such, they don’t require any room behind the golfer (so just swinging space is needed). They also do not need to see the ball fly into the screen. Although we wouldn’t recommend standing right in front of the screen for hitting. 4.5 metres is enough space to swing with a camera based launch monitor but we recommend 6 metres so you have safety space for others to wait, watch and relax.
Radar-based technology: This type typically requires more depth as it need to be a required distance away from the ball at impact and needs to see a certain amount of ball flight into the screen. The minimum depth required for a radar launch monitor is 6 metres but we recommend more room to incorporate a safety zone. If you can only go as far as a 6 metre deep build, then a camera based launch monitor is the option for you.
What else do you want to use the space for? Do you want to incorporate a modest bar and entertainment zone or home gym area? Maybe you require some extra storage or want to include a home office. Every build is unique and we can help with the right options for you.
How much does a home simulator room cost?
All our build designs are bespoke to your requirements, but a 4x6M fully-fitted Outtabounds garden sim room starts at £35,000.
